🎧 Episode #72 You Are Not an Island: The Power of Letting Others Care for You (Part 9)
We are not meant to get through life alone. In this episode, I share my mom’s ninth lesson: the importance of letting others take care of you.
Today's spoken word piece, one of my new favorites, is about how we aren't islands. Even if we don't recognize it, we don't live in a vacuum. We need connection; even when the world feels intrusive, and people are "too much to handle," we still need anchors in our lives. Those are the people we can really count on. The ones who truly care about our lives. Asking those people for help or letting them take care of you when you need it makes your life better – and gives their lives purpose.
We are winding our way toward the final lesson, number 10, in two weeks (May 20). I'll also have an exciting announcement later this month!
For now, let's focus on asking for help and letting others into our lives when we need their perspective, energy, and support!
ðŸ’Key Takeaways from this Episode:
- We aren’t meant to navigate life alone. Independence and self-sufficiency have their limits. When we recognize that we’ve reached our capacity, our best next steps might be contemplation. However, they might also be reaching out emotionally, mentally, or practically to seek support. Learning when to be alone with our inner thoughts for guidance and when to ask for outside help is key.
- Asking for help expands possibilities. Other people introduce us to new perspectives, solutions, and pathways that we would not see (or not see easily) on our own. Letting someone in can shift outcomes in unexpected, constructive ways.
- Receiving care is mutually beneficial. Allowing others to help activates their generosity, purpose, and connection. Caregiving is not one-sided; it strengthens both people and deepens relationships.
- Support systems provide grounding and resilience. Our trusted and cherished relationships with family and friends help us handle stressful periods of life, offer stability, and create a sense of safety during uncertain or transitional times.
- Reciprocal relationships, with healthy giving and receiving, matter just as much as self-sufficiency. When we prioritize balanced, supportive relationships and release draining ones, it improves our emotional well-being and clarity.
I Am Not an Island
By Jill Hodge
There’s no palm tree growing out of my hand
No coconuts falling from my curls
There’s no breeze sweeping up from my shoulders
Or aqua water gushing between my toes
For I am not an island
There’s no steel band playing in my head
No pineapple or guava dancing in my belly
In fact, there’s no one inside or around me
And that’s a problem
For I am not an island
I need you to come and plant a banana tree
I need you to shade me from the sun
I need to talk to you in that cave
When I’m alone and undone
For I am not an island
I need you to sing to the birds with me
To swim among the fish and play
I need to know that you are there in the dark
When fears start to shake and predators betray
For I am not an island
I don’t want the solitary way
Its road leads to nowhere I want to go
For it’s when we are holding hands
And our words caress, connect
That I know which way to go
With you on this island
I have more than enough to share
Take all my worldly possessions
But leave that hand on my shoulder, please
Cause your touch is more than expression
It’s a language that calms my soul
and helps me forget each and every one
Of life’s painful digressions
For I am not an island
No, I am not an island
Journal Prompts to Explore How Others Can for You
Here are some journal prompts to explore how others can care for you and your needs. Write or reflect on these prompts.
You don’t have to go it alone in life. Especially if you are the main caregiver or head of your household, you may feel that if you stop doing everything for even a moment, the whole thing will come crashing down, but life isn’t like that. Those are fears that usually don’t ring true.
What’s most needed in those moments of personal terror, fear, or overthinking is the comforting presence of family or friends. Perhaps to widen your perspective, to take some of the burden off your shoulders, or to help you learn to ask for care, comfort, or support for yourself.
Try it! Ask someone for help and see what happens. I hope that you find that my mom’s 9th lesson – that being taken care of is important and necessary – brings your close friends even closer and temps down fears and overthinking. It does for me, and I’m grateful every day for this important lesson my mom taught me.🌞
